School-Wide Positive Behaviour Supports (SWPBS)
At Dandenong Primary School, we are committed to a School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) framework. This evidence-based approach, designed for Victorian government schools, fosters a positive, safe, and supportive learning environment. This document outlines the essential elements we seek to uphold when implementing SWPBS approaches.
Our whole-school approach ensures that teachers and students can focus on building relationships and engaging in learning. Students and staff benefit from:
Increased respectful and positive behaviour
More time focused on instruction
Improved social-emotional wellbeing
Positive and respectful relationships among students and staff
Greater use of evidence-based instructional practices
A predictable learning environment with enhanced safety and attendance
Our students understand these expectations which are organised below our three school values of:
Excellence
Respect
Responsibility
These expectations are captured in our school's Matrix of Expectations, which is displayed in all learning areas, common spaces and in the school yard.
When students display expected behaviour in both learning areas and the playground, they love being acknowledged through verbal praise and raffle tickets. Students who have received a raffle ticket vote for a whole of school celebration activity at the end of each term. A raffle ticket is also drawn at every assembly, with prizes supplied by local businesses such as Muffin Break awarded to some individual students.
If a student does not demonstrate the expected behaviours, we consistently apply our Correction Plan across the school. This approach provides students with multiple opportunities to make positive choices in line with our Matrix of Expectations. When responding to problem behaviour, staff first determine whether the behaviour is minor or major:
Minor behaviours are addressed immediately by the staff member who witnessed the incident. The teacher provides follow-up and consequences.
Major behaviours pose an immediate safety risk to students and/or staff. In these cases, leadership is contacted immediately, and consequences are managed by a member of the Leadership Team in collaboration with the classroom teacher.
The graphics below are displayed in every learning space as a visual reminder of the steps staff take when students do not meet our school-wide expectations. Our approach focuses on supporting students to take responsibility for restoring relationships, developing a positive mindset, and repairing any harm.
